Beaufort County Senior Games

BLUFFTON -- The 12th annual Beaufort County Senior Games closed on Friday, November 7 with the "Closing Celebration Lunch" at the Sun City Hilton Head Outdoor Pavilion. Over 500 athletes and 190 volunteers contributed and brought the Games to a successful end.

Pickleball was this year's new event of roughly 20 sports and games, from dominoes to volleyball. Although many of the events are in gated communities, special passes were available at guard gates for spectators and competitors. "Everyone was welcome to participate this year," Bronsky said, "we hope to pass the 700 mark next year."

For the athletes, who range in age from 50 to older than 90, there's a social aspect to the games, but there is plenty of competition to win, too. "They train all year for this event," Bronsky said.

Pickleball, a hybrid of racquetball and tennis played with a Wiffle ball on a small court, has become popular with local seniors. The Sun City club, which started two years ago, has grown to 600 members, said Al Stern, treasurer of the organizing committee. "It gives you a really good workout without as much running after the ball as tennis," Stern said.

About 190 volunteers were spread throughout the county to staff the games, Bronsky said. The organizing committee is already looking for volunteers to help with the 2009 games. Those interested to volunteer can reach her at 843-705-4021.

Featured Artists: The Addingtons

Lissa and David Addington explore new forms of photographic art in their "Two-for-One" exhibit at the BAA Gallery now through September 6.

The exhibit features the Addingtons' current work in digital photography, the refining and manipulation of color and intensity in photographic images. Subject matter from the couple's recent travels to the Galapagos, Mexico and Hawaii is included.

Following successful professional careers--David's as a professor of theater arts, Lissa's as a studio photographer--the Addingtons retired to Beaufort where their deep interest in digital photography began. All their work is produced in their home studio on Fripp.

Working and playing together has proved to be a good formula for the Addingtons--they celebrated their 50th anniversary this summer.

The Addingtons' exhibit and that of work by other BAA members is open to the public at the BAA Gallery located at 905 Port Republic St. in Downtown Beaufort. All works are for sale.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays thru Saturdays. Call 843-379-2222 for more information.
