Beaufort County Senior Games

BLUFFTON -- The 12th annual Beaufort County Senior Games closed on Friday, November 7 with the "Closing Celebration Lunch" at the Sun City Hilton Head Outdoor Pavilion. Over 500 athletes and 190 volunteers contributed and brought the Games to a successful end.

Pickleball was one of roughly 24 sports and games, from dominoes to volleyball. Although many of the events are in gated communities, special passes were available at the gates for guests and competitors. "Everyone was welcome to participate this year," Bronsky said, "we hope to pass the 700 mark next year."

Pickleball, a hybrid of racquetball and tennis played with a Wiffle ball on a small court, has become popular with local seniors. The Sun City club, which started three years ago, has grown to over 600 members, said Al Stern, treasurer of the organizing committee. "It gives you a really good workout without as much running after the ball as tennis," Stern said.

On October 27 at the Bluffton Library, Cherie Bronsky, Chairperson for the Beaufort County Senior Games was awarded a proclamation from Beaufort County establishing the Beaufort County Senior Games as a yearly event. Jerry Stewart, County Council from District 10, presented the proclamation to Cherie. People from all over the county participated in this year's games in over 59 events with 9 age categories; all over 50 years of age. This event signifies the counties support and recognition to the importance of health and fitness for all seniors living in Beaufort County.

About 190 volunteers were spread throughout the county to staff the games, Bronsky said. The organizing committee is already looking for volunteers to help with the 2009 games. Those interested to volunteer can reach her at 843-705-4021.
